Rodrigues Makes History in 50-Vote Unofficial Margin
Nail-Biters Define Ward Contests; One Incumbent Unseated
Brockton, MA - November 4 - In the closest mayoral race in recent memory, unofficial results have Moises M. Rodrigues defeating Jean Bradley Derenoncourt by just 50 votes Tuesday night, 6,470 to 6,420, becoming Brockton’s first mayor of color.
The razor-thin margin – less than 0.4% of the 13,002 votes cast – capped a hard-fought campaign that drew intense interest throughout the city.
Council At-Large: Two Incumbents, Two Newcomers
In the citywide race for four Councillor At-Large seats, incumbent David C. Teixeira led the field with 6,992 votes. Carla M. Darosa finished second with 5,639 votes, followed by incumbent Winthrop H. Farwell, Jr. with 5,198 and newcomer Jeff Charnel with 5,012.
Missing the cut were Judith Nelson (3,521), Michael Nunes (3,266), Joseph Edwald Francois (2,085), and Matthieu C. Delisme (1,878).
Ward Races: Seven-Vote Squeaker Highlights Close Contests
The night’s closest race came in Ward 1, where Marlon D. Green edged Ulisses Manuel Varela by a mere seven votes, 1,031 to 1,024, for City Councillor.
Ward 1 also produced the night’s only School Committee upset, as Stephen V. Pina defeated incumbent Jorge Luis Vega III, 1,132 to 886.
Other nail-biters included Ward 3’s School Committee race, where incumbent Ana C. Oliver narrowly held off Matthew Stanton, 971 to 963 – a margin of just eight votes. In the same ward, incumbent Philip Edward Griffin retained his City Councillor seat over Gary Keith, 976 to 927.
Incumbents Dominate Remaining Wards
Most other incumbents cruised to re-election:
Ward 2: Maria T. Tavares easily retained her City Councillor seat with 947 votes over Malice Santos Veiga’s 284. Claudio Gomes won the school committee seat over Cynthia McCall-Hodges, 769 to 466.
Ward 4: Susan Jeanne Nicastro won re-election as City Councillor with 1,080 votes to Tony Branch’s 583. Incumbent Tony Andrade Rodrigues held his School Committee seat, defeating Maria Antonia Daveiga 903 to 801.
Ward 5: Incumbent Jeffrey A. Thompson kept his City Councillor position, beating Ellie V. Teixeira 901 to 857. Sandra Maria Centeio won the School Committee seat with 1,273 votes over Nolan Joseph Napier’s 447.
Ward 6: Both incumbents won handily. John Lally retained his City Councillor seat over Lisa E. Crowley, 1,216 to 663, while Joyce J. Asack held her School Committee position against Lucibele Daisi Delgado, 1,217 to 578.
Ward 7: Shirley Rita Asack ran unopposed for City Councillor, receiving 1,280 votes. Incumbent Timothy Joseph Sullivan kept his School Committee seat, defeating Jimmy Lutchi Pereira 869 to 576.
